Mad Thoughts

Me. Music. 2008.

Every year I like to use the Smart Playlists feature in iTunes to find out what my favorite songs of that year were. Why go by what my heart says about the year in music, when I can look at statistics? Check out 2007 for an example. All I do is make a smart list of music with the year set to 2008 and sort by the play count. Simple. Effective.

The list created by this year, however, was galactically boring. Just take your favorite tracks from the latest Gnarls Barkley and Radiohead albums, and toss in some Kings of Leon, Weezer, and NIN.

I’ve decided to mix it up, and make a list of songs I “discovered” in 2008. This list uses the date added option (which can include any era of music except 2008) in making an iTunes smart playlist, again, sorted by most played. Discovered doesn’t necessarily mean, heard it for the first time in 2008. It can also mean songs I knew and already loved, but they weren’t added to my music collection until this year.

Here are the top 25 songs I discovered in 2008:

  1. Born Slippy by Kupek
  2. God Moving Over the Face of the Water by Moby
  3. Time to Pretend by MGMT
  4. Everything is Wrong by Moby
  5. Through the Fire and the Flames by Dragonforce
  6. When it’s Cold I’d Like to Die by Moby
  7. Get Up! (Before the Night is Over) by Technotronic
  8. We Need a Resolution by Aaliyah
  9. Again and Again by The Bird and the Bee
  10. Chelsea Danger by The Fratellis
  11. Black Cat by Ladytron
  12. Tomorrow by Ladytron
  13. I’m a Lady by Santogold
  14. Master Blaster by Stevie Wonder
  15. Deer Dance by System of a Down
  16. Pop Bottles by Birdman (feat. Lil Wayne)
  17. What Would Wolves Do by Les Savy fav
  18. L.E.S. Artistes by Santogold
  19. Bounce by System of a Down
  20. Monstertruckdriver by T.Raumschmiere
  21. Lethal Industry by Tiesto
  22. Ahead by a Century by The Tragically Hip
  23. WWIII by KMFDM
  24. The Beginging is the End is the Begining by The Smashing Pumpkins
  25. Radio Song by Superbus

Thoughts? Suggestions? If you have to know, Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon was my most played song of 2008. If you want me to post one of these tracks, hollatchaboy.
