Up in arms over Ricky Martin
READ IT! Its brilliant.
Ricky Martin jokes are leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
I actually just had the gall to unfollow someone because they made a semi-sarcastic comment about it. Truly, it wasn’t offensive. It was just.. not kind.
And for some odd reason, I really, really want the world to be kind to Ricky Martin.
Maybe because I want the world to be kind to me. Maybe because, I want to stop being afraid that same-sex marriage in DC will be repealed before I have a chance to get married. Maybe because I am struggling with the idea of rushing my own wedding just in case it is repealed. And it is so fucking unfair, I choke on my rage, at times.
NOM joined Tumblr, did you know? There is large part of me that wants to start a campaign to have Tumblr Staff kick them the hell out. Apparently, there is a free-speech-hating, autocratic despot inside of me. Isn’t that nice to know.
And maybe, if I’m honest, Ricky Martin has an advantage on me. He comes out once, and that’s it. He doesn’t have to meet new colleagues, or friends of friends, or strangers at the bus stop who ask about your personal life, and come out, again. He doesn’t have to worry about starting a new job, seeing a new doctor, renting a new apartment, and coming out, again.
This time I come out, it will be a person who will spit on me. This time I walk down the street, holding my girlfriend’s hand, it will be a person who won’t stop at just yelling obscenities.
Ricky Martin, however, will be the target of new campaigns against the homosexual agenda, or the poster boy for jokes about from Dave Letterman’s uninspired writers. People may picket his shows and suggest he is unfit to parent his children. He will be news, and I will come to work tomorrow, same as I did today.
But if the world is kind to Ricky Martin, maybe it will be kinder to me.
