The Ten Commandments, so often carved into rock by hack sculptors for placement in and around courtrooms: The first four say there’s but one God, that we shouldn’t worship false idols, that we shouldn’t take God’s name in vain, and that we should keep the Sabbath holy. We do not legislate these, and in fact, we legislate the opposite: freedom of religion. Fuck Jesus Christ and Buddha six ways to Sunday if you try to take away my Sailor Moon fuckshrine.

Wad city speaks on Ross Douthat: The Marriage Ideal

Seriously though, read the whole thing.

Up in arms over Ricky Martin

READ IT! Its brilliant.

mfred:

Ricky Martin jokes are leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

I actually just had the gall to unfollow someone because they made a semi-sarcastic comment about it.  Truly, it wasn’t offensive.  It was just.. not kind.

And for some odd reason, I really, really want the world to be kind to Ricky Martin.

Maybe because I want the world to be kind to me.  Maybe because, I want to stop being afraid that same-sex marriage in DC will be repealed before I have a chance to get married.  Maybe because I am struggling with the idea of rushing my own wedding just in case it is repealed. And it is so fucking unfair, I choke on my rage, at times.

NOM joined Tumblr, did you know? There is large part of me that wants to start a campaign to have Tumblr Staff kick them the hell out.  Apparently, there is a free-speech-hating, autocratic despot inside of me.  Isn’t that nice to know.

And maybe, if I’m honest, Ricky Martin has an advantage on me.  He comes out once, and that’s it.  He doesn’t have to meet new colleagues, or friends of friends, or strangers at the bus stop who ask about your personal life, and come out, again. He doesn’t have to worry about starting a new job, seeing a new doctor, renting a new apartment, and coming out, again.

This time I come out, it will be a person who will spit on me.  This time I walk down the street, holding my girlfriend’s hand, it will be a person who won’t stop at just yelling obscenities.

Ricky Martin, however, will be the target of new campaigns against the homosexual agenda, or the poster boy for jokes about from Dave Letterman’s uninspired writers. People may picket his shows and suggest he is unfit to parent his children. He will be news, and I will come to work tomorrow, same as I did today.

But if the world is kind to Ricky Martin, maybe it will be kinder to me.

Marriage is one of the basic building blocks of our neighborhoods and our nation. At its best, it is a stable bond between two individuals who work to create a loving household and a social and economic partnership. We encourage couples to marry because the commitments they make to one another provide benefits not only to themselves but also to their families and communities. Marriage requires thinking beyond one’s own needs. It transforms two individuals into a union based on shared aspirations, and in doing so establishes a formal investment in the well-being of society. The fact that individuals who happen to be gay want to share in this vital social institution is evidence that conservative ideals enjoy widespread acceptance. Conservatives should celebrate this, rather than lament it.

Its an equal protection issue. We now have laws (hate crimes) that define sexuality as a specific class, alongside race and gender.

If you’ve defined sexuality as something that requires protection, than that protection must extend in other areas.

I may not have all the details right, but the argument doesn’t have to go much farther than that. Every law, in any state, that blocks people from entering into a marriage contract with one another is unconstitutional. Take all the opinion polls you want, its unconstitutional and I believe it will eventually be ruled as such.

A must read: Democracy Defeats Liberty

Wadcity explains why the Iowa decision is more important than the Vermont bill.

I’ve said this from the start, it doesn’t matter what you believe, gays have to be allowed to get married. Its called equal protection. Its law.
