Well I just heard the news today
It seems my life is going to change
I closed my eyes, begin to pray
Then tears of joy stream down my face
With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to this place
I’ll show you everything
With arms wide open
With arms wide openArms Wide Open by Creed

A black President. Muslims in America. Gays marrying. Scary times if you’re an asshat. Scarier if you’re a racist, uneducated, born-again Christian without decent job prospects.

We need to recognize that when we see a growing fringe movement, it is NOT because things are getting worse, but in fact because, in the long run, things are getting better.
wad city: Why We Should Interpret the Islamophobic Glenn Beck Juggalo Movement As A Sign of Progress
The above quote from Wadcity and the following quote from Human Dog more than adequately sum up my feelings about Glenn Beck’s ‘Restoring Honor’ Summer Bar-b-que that took place yesterday in Washington DC.
Why not devote this energy to labor movement activities or contemporary urban and suburban land-use debates that directly relate to our national obsession with reckless energy consumption and waste that drive some of the worst abuses of our system from wars to cheap labor exploitation. Subjects that actually affect the existence of millions of people in this country and beyond.
Instead, everyday it’s look what Sarah Palin said while giving a handjob to Glenn Beck, look how crazy their followers are etc etc. These things are self-evident. It’s not news.
Not much more I can add and when it comes to this specific subject (Glenn Beck), I’m increasingly lazy and slow to respond. Let him fantasize about the past. Let him wish and pray for a day when America returns to whatever he thinks we as a nation once were. I’m looking forward.
