Does Marvel have a female problem? I’ve never understood why it seemed that women liked DC more than Marvel, but according to this application that analyzes Tweets, it might just be true.
Personally, I find Marvel’s character base to be far more compelling that DC’s, so I never thought of anything in strictly terms of gender. Maybe DC just has more iconic female characters?

If two new women’s websites are to be believed, women want to read about boys, cute animals, their periods, and they want to read it in a Valley Girl accent.

Tricia Romano, on why new women’s sites (xoJane; that one by Zooey Deschanel) need to drop the pink perkiness and grow up (via newsweek)

Or maybe we can all STFU and let people read what they want. Nobody said this shit about the explosion of “men’s” magazines like FHM and Maxim 10 years ago.

Well, if they did, I missed it.

My point is, it seems that only women get this sort of scrutiny when they try to start something that’s exclusively for women. Maybe that’s the inherent problem, but I find it odd that women always seem to be under heavier scrutiny on their reading habits and/or internet habits than men. I’ve just never read a quote that said, “According to a new website, men want to read about women, sports, alcoholic beverages, and they want to read it in a Tom Waits accent. They need to grow up.”

In short, women be shopping.

Friday Night Stupidity

Filled out Esquire magazine’s Sexiest Woman Alive brackets, despite feeling like a douche bag the entire time. It all came down to Christina Hendricks and Beyonce. I can’t decide and you can’t make me.

Preview for Marvel's upcoming Girl Comics #1

From the art to the writing to the lettering to the assistant editors, every aspect of this book was produced by women.

This project has had plenty detractors since being announced last December, but here’s what the series’ editor Jeanine Schaefer had to say about it:

It’s actually comics BY women—and I mean, top to bottom: written, penciled, inked, colored, lettered. The logo is by a woman, all the interior design, production, proof-reading and editing is all by women.

Although some creators have gravitated towards their favorite female super hero, it’s not specifically focused on our female characters, and I’m not trying to generate content that I think will appeal to more women. I don’t want to give away all the stories, but we’re really running the gamut of Marvel characters, from Punisher to the FF to Mary Jane. We’re making great comics by great women, period—when given the opportunity to create a story about whatever they wanted, the pitches I got back from everyone have been hugely diverse in tone and characters.

I’m looking forward to the book. Anything that attempts to celebrate (what little) diversity that exists in the comic industry, I’m a fan of.

Monica Bellucci’s existence proves that there is something more out there, something greater than ourselves. I don’t know if its a good force or an evil force but its something… and she is its Valkyrie.

Can Wearing Your Bra Cause Cancer?!

According to this article, yes.

aja:

Based on the results of this study, the link between bras and breast cancer is about three times greater than the link between cigarette smoking and cancer.

Dig this:

Many physicians and researchers now agree that wearing a tight fitting bra can cut off lymph drainage, which can contribute to the development of breast cancer, as your body will be less able to excrete all the toxins you’re exposed to on a daily basis.

And this!

In addition to that, the metal wire can also act as an antenna attracting electromagnetic fields, which can also increase your risk of breast cancer.
